Where Does Canola Oil Come From ?

The History of Canola Oil

What we do

From simple beginnings in the 1940s, Canada’s canola industry has faced and overcome many challenges. Alternative markets were developed, nutritional studies were in Canada and extensive plant breeding to modify the nutritional make up of rapeseed was undertaken. In 1950, area seeded to rapeseed dropped to 162 hectares (400 acres) from a high in 1948 of 32,300 hectares (80,000) acres. The postwar availability of other edible oils eliminated the need for rapeseed, but some processors continued to pursue industrial oil export markets. But in 1970’s a paper presented at an international conference on rapeseed as an edible oil due to its erotica acid content. Although there was no evidence of harmful effects in humans, the minister of health Canada stated that it would be prudent to change over to change over to low-erotica acid varieties as soon as practicable.

Canola oil is a good fat your body needs fat – to keep you warm, provide energy and help you absorb fat-soluble vitamins and carotenoids. The national academy of science dietary reference intakes, developed by Canadian and American nutrition experts, recommends that fat provide between 20% and 35% of total energy intake. But some fats are healthier for you than others. Canola oil provides more of the good fats than any other popular vegetables oil.

Canola oil is heart healthy it has the least saturated fat of any common cooking oil. In fact, it has less than half the saturated fat of olive or soybean oil. The US food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized a qualified health claim for canola oil’s ability to reduce the risk of heart disease when used in place of saturated fat.

Canola oil is ideal for any type of cooking from salad dressings to sautéing, canola oil’s neutral taste and light texture make it a great match for just about everything. Furthermore, its high heat tolerance means you can use canola oil for anything from baking to stir-frying or grilling. Canola oil is used around the world in fact, it is number one vegetable oil in Canada and Japan, while number two in Mexico and the United States. Overall, it is the third most consumed vegetable oil in the world.

Why Canola?

Dietary fat, in moderation, is needed to provide energy and help absorb fat-soluble vitamins. Increasingly, it has become apparent that the type of fat in the diet is important. In certain fats such as omega-3 and omega-6 fats are essential for good nutrition and must be consumed as part of a healthy diet.

Canola oil is a good source of vitamin E. One serving, 10 ml, has a % daily value of 20%, meaning that a consumer who eats a 2,000 calorie diet gets about one-fifth of his or her vitamin E intake for the day from one serving of canola oil. The label may state “good source of vitamin E” or “high in vitamin E” to show that canola oil is an important source of this essential vitamin.
